The Sputnik Before Christmas

It's been 910 days since my boyfriend started talking about the Sputnik Chandelier from West Elm. It was 2022 and renovations on his second floor were well underway. His empty office needed some cozy carpet and of course, an eye-catching light. There it was, he had found the perfect fixture to suspend above the stairs. The problem was it was a little expensive and it wasn't necessary to buy at the time. West Elm described the light as"A modern take on an iconic mid-century design." I like to call it The Sea Urchin though. It's a larger version of something I would accidentally step on at the beach and have to get rushed to the hospital right away.

Fast forward to fall 2024 and tracking one of these down was a little bit of an adventure. As soon as we found out that it was being pulled off the shelves, I went into problem-solving mode. (Like any good woman's mind would.) Shout out to the West Elm crew in Tulsa, OK. Your kindness was a breath of fresh air and I appreciated all your help to make this happen.

Oh you'd like to hear the story? Well sure! Without further ado, here is my take on an adaptation of The Night Before Christmas.

'Twas three months before Christmas when all through the land,

Not a Sputnik was hanging, all West Elm shelves were bare.

One phone call on lunch, was all that it took,

Lindsey's mind started whirring, a plan starting to cook.

The light that Jake wanted, that looked like an urchin,

Discontinued and clearanced, caused Lindsey quite a bit of searchin'

Each night through the plan, his dog Zelda, all snug on her bed.

Had visions of bunnies that danced through her head.

Jake in his golf polo, went on with work as usual,

While Lindsey called store after store, fearing she wouldn't find a Sputnik usable.

When out in Tulsa, there arose such a clatter,

Poof there it was, almost as served on a platter!

Lindsey sprang from Texas eager to see,

She questioned "Was this, the Sputnik I need it to be?"

Away to Oklahoma, she drove in a flash.

Only telling her BFF Abby, in case of a crash.

The crew at West Elm rolled it out on a holiday tray,

A large chandelier, golden-brass in display.

She knew in that moment, this was the Christmas present to be.

She thought to herself "Jake won't see it coming, especially from me."

Lindsey whistled and sang, Christmas songs a galore,

While she wandered and drove, back home from the store.

But alas, the story didn't come to an end there,

She still needed to ship, this urchin with care.

All the shippers in the area laughed at the size,

When she struggled to find a box, that would encompass this prize.

After consulting with friends and family a-plenty,

Even considering smuggling, through work to "save a penny."

Making a last minute decision, the light wrapped and tied in a bow,

Lead to Lindsey driving, her Rav-4 home through the snow.

Fourteen hours later, back home to the mid-west,

This sea urchin chandelier, was looking for a place to rest.

Lindsey brought the gift to Jake, one last final exchange of the year,

She couldn't wait to see his reaction, would he be filled with cheer?

A few days before Christmas, she handed him the light, and I swear you could hear one last pun of the night.

"Happy Christmas to all, and to all let there be light!"

Until next time, stay curious and let's wander-after coffee of course.
