Today's Coffee: black, dispensed perfectly into my smooth green coffee cup. Of course, the mug is adorned with my favorite words: Hiking Fuel. As I write, I am realizing that I have been on the same Nespresso pod kick of Starbucks holiday edition for far too long. Time to order something different. Maybe Cafe Verona is next.

Mission of the Year: Explore Texas trails more. Or at least that is what I am telling myself. But so far I am on a good start. Last week was Eisenhower State Park, and this week I grabbed a friend to explore the 20 miles of the Fort Worth Nature preserve...Okay you got me. Maybe not the full 20 miles, but we accomplished 7 for the day. Which isn't bad when you don't start before noon. The hard part is I would stay out there all day if I didn't actually have responsibilities.

Lesson One: Well take it from me, communication is key. If going with a friend, you probably should coordinate where you would like to park and meet when going to a state park. Lesson learned that we did not do this and I drove right past her. We were chatting on the phone about where she was at and wouldn't you know it, I missed my turn. Whoopsie! I mean, I just wanted to see the buffalo before meeting up right? We realized it then we are definitely 'wing it' people. We will make a plan, but not iron out all the details. Which is why we then had to decide on which trail we were actually choosing.

Hiking Trail Decisions: The quickest way to decide on what trail you would like to do is follow the water. We were both on board with this as there were a few perks. You're more likely to run across critters like deer or cranes, see better sun sets and there are more outlooks for photos. So that's what we did. We ended up trucking along the Canyon Ridge trail that led to the little island of Greer. The best part, the snow that lingered along the trail added a sense of nostalgia to my hike today. Of course, it wouldn't be an adventure without some photos.

Take Photos: You run across three different types of people in this world. Ones that like to document everything with a photo, those that don't grab their phone at all, and those who strike a balance in between. I believe it's good to be that third person somewhere in the middle. Someone who can enjoy the beauty of nature without being attached to a screen, but also someone who enjoys getting the best angles for a photo. Besides, it's fun to add to a travel album. So take the photo I say! And make sure your trail partner is of the same mentality. It helps if you stop and they stop at the same time.
